DISCOVERING ABILITIES, AN OPPORTUNITY

Discovering Abilities, an Opportunity (DAO) emerged from the need for individuals with disabilities to have equal opportunities for social inclusion. Through this programme, people with disabilities learn to discover their abilities and become self-sufficient. In doing so, barriers to communication, education, social acceptance, and employment opportunities within society are reduced.

METHOD “DISCOVERING ABILITIES, AN OPPORTUNITY”

This is a way of doing things and transforming lives through an interdisciplinary approach, where abilities and opportunities for development and progress are discovered. It is based on principles and phases, focusing on the individual in any stage of life, especially when facing conditions of need and vulnerability.

Social Work for People with Disabilities

We Work from Abilities

Dr. María Luisa has worked for many years to encourage the autonomy of people with disabilities, providing them with tools to thrive in different contexts. Through the program “Discovering Ability, an Opportunity” • DCO, the work initiated by Dr. María Luisa continues, benefiting people with disabilities and their support networks.

Benefited Individuals

Thanks to a comprehensive, humanistic, inclusive, and innovative proposal, it is possible to address the main challenges faced by people with disabilities. The core idea is that these individuals, with support from the Foundation and collaboration among four key stakeholders (people with disabilities themselves, their families and/or guardians, civil society, and the state), can discover their own potential, abilities, and autonomy. This enables them to be the architects of their social and productive inclusion.

SOCIAL AND PRODUCTIVE INCLUSION

This dimension promotes the social and productive inclusion of people with disabilities and their stakeholders. It facilitates access for people with disabilities to the workplace, enabling them to act autonomously and providing support for effective interaction.

“Without Limits” is a project developed by the International María Luisa de Moreno Foundation in collaboration with local governments and private companies. Its purpose is to promote the autonomy and independence of people with disabilities by developing and strengthening their abilities, thus achieving their social and productive inclusion.

SOCIAL AND COMMUNICATIVE INCLUSION

For the Foundation, it is essential that people can engage with the community and derive satisfaction from these interactions. Therefore, through the projects Written Communication and Speaking Hands, various activities are implemented where participants can share their knowledge, experiences, and values.

PROJECTS

The Foundation consolidates its objectives through various projects where experiential workshops are conducted, focusing on life projects, communication skills, and respectful treatment of people with disabilities.

Written Communication

Its goal is to strengthen written Spanish as a second language for people with hearing disabilities, reducing communication barriers.

Speaking Hands

Its goal is to foster respect and communicative skills in individuals, with and without disabilities, through learning Colombian Sign Language.
