Programme: Health Brigades Across Colombia
HEALTH BRIGADES
The Health Brigades Across Colombia programme aims to assist thousands of Colombians throughout the country in accessing essential health services, especially in geographically challenging areas where access is limited.
The methodology employed in this programme involves creating support networks to achieve greater and more effective impacts in communities. It includes participation from government entities and health sector organisations to provide basic and specialised healthcare services.
The Foundation collaborates with various state institutions, including consulates, embassies, the Colombian Armed Forces, and oversight entities such as local and departmental health secretariats, governorships, mayoralties, the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF), among others, to conduct comprehensive health brigades in vulnerable and hard-to-reach areas. Many of these regions are affected by the presence of armed groups operating outside the law. Through these efforts, the Foundation brings wellbeing and hope to residents of these territories.
With the Health Brigades programme, remote areas of Colombia have been reached, requiring hours of travel by land, water, and air. Buses, trucks, aeroplanes, helicopters, ships, and defence boats have often been used to transport doctors, specialists, healthcare professionals, and Foundation volunteers who carry out this noble mission.
The value proposition of the Foundation through this programme is to contribute to improving the quality of life of the beneficiaries. In addition to receiving aid, they participate in awareness-raising activities on topics such as conflict resolution, positive treatment, household economy, and assertive communication. These initiatives foster positive changes in civic and family coexistence through psychosocial tools.
ACTIVITIES
The activities developed within the Health Brigades Programme include the following:
Medical consultations in specialities such as internal medicine, cardiology, nephrology, otorhinolaryngology, gynaecology, human genetics, ophthalmology, optometry, general medicine, speech therapy, psychology, pulmonology, chiropractic care, physiotherapy, nutrition, dentistry, neurology, paediatric neurology, paediatrics, dermatology, orthopaedics, respiratory therapy, diabetology, and haematology. Thanks to new technologies, telemedicine consultations with doctors located in other countries are also provided.
In addition to medical consultations, workshops are held on oral hygiene, the prevention of child sexual abuse, and the promotion of values to strengthen coexistence within families and society.
The aid delivered through the Health Brigades includes the provision of basic and specialised healthcare services, which contribute to improving the quality of life of the beneficiary populations. Free of charge, medications, pre-prescribed glasses, dental prostheses, orthoses, gifts, and toys for children are distributed.
WE REACH THE MOST REMOTE AREAS OF THE COUNTRY
The priority of the Health Brigades programme is to benefit vulnerable communities composed of all population groups, such as children, adults, the elderly, and people with disabilities. These communities are located in rural areas, riverbanks, border zones, remote hamlets far from urban centres, informal settlements, indigenous populations, Afro-descendant populations, victims of armed conflict, and displaced populations.
